"Erwin Helfer, an unsung hero of Chicago blues, a pianist who can pound out anything from boogie to Bach, and a teacher who's inspired almost everyone in these parts who's serious about playing blues keyboards (Myra Melford, Yoko Noge, etc.)" - The Chicago Reader

Erwin is mostly self taught later on he received a Bachelor of Music from the American Conservatory and then Masters of Music from Northeastern Illinois University.

Erwin starts students playing by ear and later introduces note reading and theory. He teaches both improvisation and classical music depending on where the students interests lie. When teaching improvisation, he teaches the styles he plays - blues, standards, and boogie. Erwin teaches all ages, beginners on, and has turned out professional piano players.

At annual piano recital, or "piano get-together" Erwin calls, students of all ages perform their tunes at home-party atmosphere. After the performances, there often is an imprompt 4-hands session among students. Both children and adult students learn to enjoy playing piano and develop a sincere love of music through Erwin's thoughtful curricurum that fits into each student's level and interest.
